If you want to up the ante on your method of consuming cannabis, you may be interested in learning how to do dabs. Dabbing is not for cannabis beginners, but for savvy users it can offer fast, concentrated results to shake up your favorite plant-based pastime. Find out more about how to do dabs in the post below.

What Is Dabbing?

Before you learn how to do dabs, you need to understand what dabbing is.

Dabs are concentrated doses of cannabis that are made by extracting THC and other cannabinoids using a solvent like butane or carbon dioxide. These are commonly known as wax, shatter, budder, and butane hash oil (BHO).

Dabbing is the process of heating a cannabis concentrate on a hot surface and then inhaling it through a dab rig. Dabs are A LOT more potent than flowers, so a little goes a long way and dosing requires a delicate balance.

Equipment You’ll Need

Dabbing tools may not all look the same as the technology improves and evolves, but the basic setup remains the same. Here’s what you’ll need to master how to do dabs:

Cannabis Extract: The most common forms used for dabbing are BHO, CO1, and solventless extracts like rosin. Avoid alcohol-based extracts.

Water Pipe: You can turn your pipe into a dab rig by removing the glass bowl pieces and replacing them with dabbing attachments.

Nail: Use a nail that fits your water pipe’s gauge. They can be made from ceramic, quartz, or titanium.

Dome: A dome is the glass hood placed around the nail. Dome-less nails don’t need a glass globe.

Torch: Creme-brulee mini-torches will do the job. You can also choose to upgrade to a propane-fueled torch to heat the nails faster.

Dabber: This tool can be glass, metal, or ceramic and is used to apply a dab.

How To Do Dabs

Now that you know what dabs are and the tools you’ll need, it’s time to learn how to do dabs.

First, set up your rig and prepare your dab. Turn on your torch and direct the flame at the nail; do this until the nail is red-hot. Next, turn off your torch and place the glass dome over the nail, letting it cool for the recommended amount of time based on the material used (10 seconds for titanium and 45 seconds for quartz nails). Once cooled, apply the dab directly on the nail inside the dome and inhale slowly. You can prevent wasting oil stuck to the dabber by rotating the dabber tip on the nail.
